MAGGIE ROGERS ON + OFF

The reign of 2016 breakout star Maggie Rogers continues with new single ‘On + Off’. This piece of upbeat indie-electronica follows major hits ‘Alaska’ and ‘Dog Years’ in that distinctive folk-meets-dance style. Influenced by an unlikely mix of the Maryland folk scene and European club revelations, Rogers’ journey of self is one that generously colours her current sound. In terms of song structure, the blog darling has taken a fair few pointers from mainstream pop, but rather than a wash of generic choruses and samey synths, Rogers keeps it interesting. One thing that might catch you out is the subject matter. On first impression, ‘On + Off’ may be interpreted as a song about sexual attraction thanks to lines like “you turn me on”, but those words have a much more tender meaning as explained by Rogers following the BBC Radio 1 premiere of the track: "if you listen to the rest of the lyrics, that is actually about emotional stability. Being on and off and finding a person that grounds you, because I think that's one of the things that's most important to me in relationships." The NYU student also took to the air to confirm that her first EP, Now That The Light Is Fading, has been slated for release on February 17th. - HT
